May 23, 2023 Couldn’t agree more. Album of nothin, really bad punchlines and terrible writing throughout Side B. If you’re listening to Eminem because it sounds good, then that’s like the lowest standard you can judge music. You listen to pop music because it sounds good as that’s all it has going for it. Don’t listen to someone like Eminem for that, ridiculous.
May 23, 2023 Eminem will never be able to put out an album that’s praised by the majority ever again. Too many people want too many different things from him. Even if he were to put a classic, it’s not going to be called a classic by the majority of people.
May 23, 2023 And to add to that, saying that Side A's sound is objectively worse than Side B is not a sincere argument either. Flows are just not a technical aspect, but also sonic, and Em's flows were much sharper and creative on A than B. His delivery was fresh and varied too, unlike the monotonous delivery on B. This is not to imply that B was bad (I like it personally), but A was simply much better
May 23, 2023 Lets be honest, if sound wasn't a big part of the enjoyment factor, rappers wouldn't bother having choruses in their songs. They'd just release accapella albums. Do you actually listen to songs that sound like s---? Because I don't. I'll listen to it once and appreciate it's content but there's no way the song is gonna be in my playlist. On the other hand, if a song doesn't talk about much but the production and flow is on point. There's a very high chance it will be in the rotation. Obviously having both is what we all hope for but if I had to choose between something like "Walk on Water" which sonically is trash and a b-----r like "You Don't Know" which really doesn't talk about much. Give me "You Don't Know" any day of the week. If sound doesn't matter just listen to the Trump freestyle. Bet that gets you pumped up in the gym.
May 23, 2023 This is why I chose this as the example: if I had to choose between average sound & great writing vs above average sound & bad writing — I’d choose the former Obviously there’s times where the music isn’t hitting even if the bars are, songs like a------ are borderline unlistenable even though he’s spittin’ — but a song like Gnat, the single from Side B, even if you claim it sounds better on the ears, what does it have to keep you engaged? There’s no bars, there’s no introspective writing, it’s just utter nonsense with average sounding rapping & production along with another time to rap fast moment at the end which loses its novelty instantly. I’d take Groundhog’s Day, Baby, Evil Twin, Brainless, Rhyme or Reason over Side B any day even if the production is a little more mediocre. I just find no value coming from Eminem on that project whatsoever, I don’t care if it’s easier to bump in the whip with your shawty.
May 23, 2023 Side A feels like a complete album too. Much more connected across the sequencing, individually the songs feel well-crafted & not strictly freestyle verses over a selected beat, although he’s still punching in areas & doing his technical displays. It’s night & day to me. I’ve never understood how it’s up for debate lol I personally think Side A production is also 10x better than Side B but I completely understand that is severely subjective.
May 23, 2023 I get the vibe you care very little about the art of music The writing, the subject, the artists touch on songs, the effort an artist puts in writing and recording. You only care if it sounds good, for example you've mentioned AI multiple times. You dont even care if it was written or performed by the artist. You only care if it sounds "good". Youd rather a computer write a "hit" and someone with a voice generator put it together, than actually respect the craft of writing music.
May 23, 2023 Personally I feel like Gnat sucks both lyrically and sonically. But to go back to your point. I don't see what's so lyrically intriguing about Side A. Nothing strikes me as exceptional in terms of writing besides Darkness. You can correct me if i'm wrong because I haven't really listened to that album since it came out. Was it Step Dad? Did Step Dad go over my head? I don't think Side B is better by a landslide or anything like that. But I definitely got more enjoyment out of it in terms of how the songs sound. Anyway there's nothing wrong with liking one over the other and there's really no point in trying to convince someone that one of them is a superior album.
May 23, 2023 Side A isn’t groundbreaking neither, but it struck a good balance of sound & writing that Em’s been missing in his music for a long a--- time. It doesn’t excel in neither, but Side B feels similar (in my opinion slightly worse) sounding & most importantly the writing is downgraded heavily. The fact that the bars are worse on Side B even though there’s less songwriting & structure to abide by, makes it weaker to me as a project from a lyricist.
