Apr 23, 2023 Their decision to call it an EP probably has more to do with marketing rather than the number of tracks. The BME EP is 37 minutes long. Most EPs are around 30 minutes, so it just barely qualifies as an EP. Kamikaze is 46 minutes long including the skits, without the skits it would be even closer to the BME EP length. The distinctions used to be a lot more technical, but these days the “mixtape”, “EP”, “album” labels are more about marketing. Each label has a certain connotation it carries.

I realize nowadays it’s alot more of a greyarea cause of streaming.. whats really the difference between an album and a mixtape for example.. it’s basically the promotion and how the artist feel about it etc… i always thought an EP were short, like 5 tracks.. sure SSEP has 10 ”tracks” but it’s like two skits and two different versions of other tracks so it’s only 6 original songs which might qualify as an EP… i know Em didnt want to have the pressure of selling alot with BME so they called it an EP to avoid that, but then putting 11 tracks on it feels weird to me… lots of albums have that amount of songs, Kamikaze for example since obviously we are not counting skits.. i do appreciate your explanation of it though

Apr 23, 2023 So why is BME considered an EP and Thriller an album? You corrected me saying it had 9 tracks and not 11, implying that the standard edition was an EP. What makes it an EP? Just because they say it’s an EP? If someone drops a 15 track project, is it an EP as well if they say it is or where do u draw the line?

Apr 23, 2023 Actually, by your logic the last track was a bonustrack. So it doesnt count. The first track was a skit (intro). So, 6. So the definition of an EP is based solely on what the artist says it is? Someone could drop a 20 track project and rightfully call it an EP?
