Jan 11, 2023 No it’s not. You’re blurring the lines of fiction and reality. I mean if you can’t see that now, when Eminem has made a career out of it, then I really don’t know what to say. Him making fun of mass shootings, raping women, shooting crowds, making fun of gay people, is clearly not how he really feels, is it? He’s saying it in jest, to fit a rhyme and to get a rise. Him making a song of a serious issue that is clearly his own views and opinions on it, is not hypocritical at all. That’s his real stance, on that topic.
Jan 11, 2023 im not blurring the lines, but to make fun of a serious issue and then switch up like he wasn't just making fun of the issue on the same album is nuts to me
Jan 11, 2023 The difference is back then Em didn’t joke about raping his mother and then a few tracks later make a song pandering to people about how r--- is bad. Joking about a topic and then trying to make a serious song about a similar topic a few tracks later makes the song feel a lot less serious and nearly ruins whatever impact it would’ve had. Em actually knew this back then. Now he just does whatever the f--- he wants without consideration of it making sense or not. Just to be clear, I am not offended by the edgy jokes and actually like them. All I’m saying is they should at least make sense in the context of the album.
Jan 11, 2023 I even make the b------s I r--- c-m must be top 10 eminem bars you could find funny but also make you feel bad. Or the opposite.
Jan 11, 2023 It’s just a whatever bar to me. Just a poor attempt at shock humor. Eminem used to be a lot funnier… he was actually clever with the shock humor. Nowadays it just comes off as try-hard
Jan 11, 2023 Almost like people miss the whole point of Slim Shady being an over exaggerated alter ego that satires the worst of humanity
Jan 12, 2023 Yeah but that was the cartoonish shock humor of a young man rapping with a funny high pitched voice. He can't really do that at 50 years old and after we've heard it all from him. That was still a nasty line to me, if anything you could argue he can't make songs like Stan, SFTM, The Way I Am and so on (or not half as good as those)
Jan 12, 2023 I don’t think he should be doing shock humor anymore in general, it’s just embarrassing. Not only is he too old for it, but it’s way too played out at this point. I’ve said something like this before, but the Slim Shady character has been flanderized to the point where he’s just a guy who says “offensive” s--- now (half the time it isn’t even offensive anymore, he made a whole song called “Offended” where the only offensive thing about it was how bad it was). If a Slim Shady LP 2 came out today it would be his worst album yet because he can’t pull that s--- off anymore even if he tried. You’re right though, he doesn’t have the skill to consistently write songs like the ones you mentioned anymore. He has become too hyperfocused on rhymes and syllables. Darkness is his closest attempt to those sorts of songs these days and while I think that song was good, it still missed the mark. His best bet is to stick to songs like Lock It Up, Favorite b----, Godzilla, that song with Kid Cudi, and Relapse sounding songs like Discombobulated
Jan 12, 2023 The issue is he often uses that humor in serious songs where it doesn’t belong. Another issue is he just isn’t funny anymore unless you find dad jokes funny.
Jan 12, 2023 Let's just focus on the fact that Ariana Grande s----d 3 d----s in one night all at the same moment
Jan 12, 2023 He needs to drop a serious album to get some respect back, but I doubt he will do it. He already had a lot of fun with Encore, Relapse, Side B
Jan 12, 2023 Yeah, he got clowned on big time for the Bornana s--- on Side B. At least the humor fit on that song though
