Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free recently sat down for a lengthy conversation with The New York Times Magazine, where it was revealed that the collaborators almost included an Eminem deep fake in the music video for "The Heart, Pt. 5." The idea was a part of a collaboration with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who own AI entertainment startup Deep Voodoo.

“You see Kendrick turned into Tupac, Kendrick turned into Kanye, and I think we had Eminem,” Stone explained. It opened a world of possibilities for Kendrick and Dave. Stone shared the duo's excitement about possible ideas: ("‘What if we did the Jussie Smollett!'”)

In the acclaimed video, Kendrick morphs into notables ranging from Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant to OJ Simpson and Jussie Smollett. The song samples Marvin Gaye’s 1976 classic “I Want You,” which Lamar interpolates on the song’s hook. The track gives more insight into Lamar’s latest alter ego, oklama, starting the track with the caption, “I am. All of us,” before he raps from the perspective of many controversial Black public figures in popular culture.

In related news, Kendrick's acclaimed Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers has garnered a whopping eight Grammy nominations; for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
