yup, i was gonna say look to his hbo biopics. sure, i agree he gets hammy. but i think he pushed himself and evolved more than alot of guys from his generation. most of them are retired. ofc tv = film anyhow, its all blurred.

and to your point, he got his first oscar nomination in almost 30 years for irishman, which was nice to see. i love his run in the 90s.

The last great songs he made, and again Great but we aren't talking his first 5 albums great, were made in 2009/2010. Pre-Undisputed in 2012. So Walk With Me now Mixtape and Album were some of the best last songs for me personally. I will take those over Undisputed and this new album.

Absolutely, but he just yells these days. He lost his range. It's more of the same old, same old. The Oscar nomination was impressive, but I still liked Pesci over De Niro and Pacino in that film. He felt like he acted his heart out. Came out of retirement for this film.

He used to be more selective too. Look at the amount of Direct to Video trash these guys sign up for. All for $. They have both been in some terrible, embarrassing DTV films. Hopkins won an Oscar too but look at the amount of trash he has been in the last 20 years.

Over the years, Swizz tried to bring DMX back. I think he deserves some credit. I don't love him as a Producer, for every great song he has 5 generic ones. But he tried. I think DMX was done somewhere between 2010-2012. I think Swizz tried to bring DMX back, tried to get the man focused and working again, to make some money and to help his family out but in the end this project isn't great. Giving him old Bono tracks or old Nas tracks, with one recycled song/DMX verse and one that has a recycled chorus which makes the verse itself suspect...

The one interview I read seemed to imply that DMX really liked the idea of doing less work, letting these featured artists carry the project. And it feels that way. But the same interview also had a quote from Swizz where he said the Next album would be DMX doing it all again, back to the same work ethic with fewer guests. So retirement talks or not, he might have done one more.

yep Hopkins came alive so to speak the last two years after collecting paychecks the last twenty years. And idk I know that’s the trope about Pacino, and to be sure he isn’t perfect but for instance I thought he made Jimmy Hoffa very warm and human. Ik Pacino and Hopkins did one VOD together the last decade but iirc Pacino post Jack and Jill did some pretty credible indie work besides working w Scorsese and qt

agreed about pesci - loved how quiet and low key menacing he was . 180 from tommmy de Vito fireworks.

Again, just my view but Any Given Sunday might have been the last great pre-Irishman film. The DTV dates back to People I Know 2002. Maybe it had a limited release, but it felt like a DTV. Since then he did six more, including the Hopkins one and the super awful Hangman. It's those HBO projects like Angels in America, You Don't Know Jack that reminded us he can still act, just not in the same way. I know De Niro really became less popular with his anti Trump stance. I view him as an actor only. Same with Pacino. Their personal views aside, late 90s was it for me. The man gave us enough great films films. I just wish he didn't tarnish his own legacy with trash.

Appreciate it. Mostly a lurker, but had to join in on the DMX discussion. Although the Em knowledge is sound, 2003 - Now. Forever a student of the rap game, but can handle my own about any artist 1995 - I guess now although I don't listen to half these kids. Not with the new sound. So maybe 2010/2015? Somewhere there was a cutoff. Where I went from listening and knowing everyone, to maybe 30%.
