Apr 6, 2015 A song has to sound good to me. Horrible lyrics can bring a song down but it depends on what it is supposed to do as well. A song like Ride Out is not meant as a lyrical masterpiece, it's an anthem (in this case for Fast/Furious 7) and it sounds great: delivery from the rap/singing, melody, beat >
Apr 6, 2015 if you prefer to hear a good beat with no substance then you should listen to house music etc. First wu tang sounded like it was made in a basement and is a hiphop clasic. Nas has never really had amazing beats but he is considered one of the best. Same with Em
Apr 6, 2015 Of course I like tracks with meh lyrics but fantastic production, IYRTITL is a pretty good example, but when they start to do corny voices and s-----y flows i just can't enjoy the song. Rapping is what makes Hip Hop interesing for me.
Apr 6, 2015 There's this pretty good album called illmatic with some decent beats, you should check it out.
Apr 6, 2015 Ι always care more about the lyrics.. I mean lyrics is all a rapper has.. It has to be something special.. Production comes second to me but if it's too trashy of course it will ruin a song no matter how good may be lyrically
Apr 6, 2015 Production isn't all about beats, it's about arrangement, moments, pace, and shaping the identity of a song. Doubling vocals or playing with them factors in to production too. And all the production on the last 3-4 Nas albums has been dope imo.
Apr 6, 2015 "When I'm in the mood for rap I need barz" it's not like that. What about character or charisma or delivery or wit, or the music, the beat switches, the bass? This s--- doesn't happen with other kinds of music. Every aspect is important as long as it works and sounds good. It's idiotic to make this distinction imo. It's like saying "do you listen to rock for the vocals or the music" lol Relapse had godly production and it's irrelevant though there are many things that can make something unlistenable
Apr 6, 2015 This is only an issue with hip hop though. When you think of a GOAT rapper you take into account lyricism, wordplay and deliver over anything else generally. With other genres the only divisive factor is only ever really the sound. That's what makes Hip Hop unique. It's why many people consider Kanye a producer first and a rapper second.
Apr 6, 2015 You dont listen to illmatic for beats its lyrically a masterpiece. if it had slulja boy ralli g about money cars and hoes over it you think it would be considered the greatest hiphop album od all timd. Gtfo
Apr 6, 2015 The point is you said Nas beats aren't good. Obviously I know Nas is a lyrical genius look at my avi ffs, all Im saying is that on at least a half of his albums, Illmatic included the production is great too, which completely transforms the feel of the album.
Apr 6, 2015 Furthermore, everything can work. There isn't some kind of formula for good rap or bad rap based on the hooks or the timing between beats or the sampling or the rhyme schemes or the amount of lines or whatever Does the GOAT rapper release acapella albums? If you remove the beats out of Illmatic, if you delete the Represent instrumental, will it sound as good? Come on dude. It's music, not poetry. Also the bolded part is bs.
Apr 6, 2015 Tbh I'm not really sure whether we're arguing or aggressively agreeing with each other, I think we're making the same point lol. And with the Kanye bit I'm just repeating what I've heard generally and I pretty much think the same.
Apr 6, 2015 I said they are not amazing also his beat choices have been inconsistent because he goes with the beat he feels he can write too not one that is going to make a hit. Most of the time the rapper dont have a lot to do with the production side of things especially now people just send over files and s--- so your liking the producer and not the actual rapper. It also depends on what your listening to music for f your at a party then sure play your DJ mustard CD. Also Kanye is a producer first thats what he is best at and how he started. Same as Dre he is a producer first
Apr 6, 2015 Yeah but the thing is that we're not debating how good a rapper is ("When you think of a GOAT rapper you take into account lyricism, wordplay and deliver over anything else generally"), but we're talking about the actual music, like in every other genre. We're judging the music, not the rapper, and there are more things in rap than the actual rapping. I thought that Kanye wasn't bad, then I listened to Blame Game and Never Let Me Down and I realised how much he sucks as a rapper
Apr 6, 2015 This is me but with all music, not just rap. I listen to pretty much everything for the sonic qualities of a song and if there's something else there I can connect with or enjoy lyrically, great, but if not then as long as it sounds good tbh. Most of my favorite music doesn't really even have much in terms of lyrics or vocals.
May 14, 2015 I prefer an artist use their voice as an instrument via flow than try to wow me lyrically
May 14, 2015 I prefer the rapping. If I want to hear good production, I listen to EDM/dubstep Obviously, both is better and I've had songs that I've loved due to the beat, but the rapping has always been decent on those
