    Don’t want to sound like a pretentious a------, but two kids I went to high school with who went into construction right after high school posted some picture of a study on Facebook that said 15/299 have died from corona virus and 46,000/45,000,000 have died from the flu. They thought that they were sharing something speaking out against the “overreaction” from the virus, but were actually sharing a post showing that it is exponentially more dangerous than the common flu lmao

    correct my math/process...

    strictly talking in the united states (not because i'm a sheltered-c----, but because this is the data i'm working with):
    • on average, 8% of the US population gets the flu each season
    • seasonal flu has an R0 rate ("R naught"...which is the number of people an individual passes the virus on to) of 1.3
    • coronavirus is estimated to have between 2 and a 3 R0 rate (let's call it 2x's that of the common flu)
    • this means that if uncontained, 16% of the US population could get coronavirus
    • a conservative average coronavirus death rate is 2% rn
    • 2% (death rate) of 16% (infected US population) is .32% (US population deaths)
    • US population is ~330 million
    • 330,000,000 * .0032 = 1,056,000 dead

    lots of factors to consider though:
    • we're attempting to contain the virus wayyyyyyy more than we do for the flu
      • counter-consideration: the flu has a vaccination, this does not
    • temperatures are starting to get warmer, and as they do so, the virus will fade away quicker
    • just because there's a ~2x's R0 rate, it doesn't mean that exactly 2x's the number of people will get infected

    I also don't get why people think it makes sense to say the flu has killed more people than coronavirus so far. Like, no s---? This coronavirus outbreak just started, give it time.

    Some chick on my fb made a post saying coronavirus has infected 90,000 and killed 3000 so far and the flu has infected 45 million and killed 46,000 at the same time so we shouldn't worry about it. Dumb b---- thinks she's being smart but don't those numbers just prove just how serious and deadly coronavirus can be if it became as widespread as the flu? Using those stats, if 45 million were infected with coronavirus, a million and a half would die, and that's ignoring the fact that at those numbers only a small percentage would be getting proper treatment so the death toll would be even greater
