Honestly I think it's a combination of all of this stuff (in no order)

- He's just straight up out of ideas. Bottom line, the big problem with Ye and Jesus Is King is that they just weren't very interesting. He wasn't making bold moves anymore, nor was he having any fun. And this happens with many artists but consider the fact that it's coming after an unimpeachable 15-year run and after he becomes a husband and a father. I don't mean to let him off the hook, but it's unsurprising, maybe even inevitable

- He's busy with fashion. This has been building since the Yeezus era, but it became a real issue in the last few years. I don't think he thinks he has much more to accomplish with music, so it just isn't his primary focus anymore. Just look at the reports that he didn't record Ye until a week before its release date - he treated it as a total afterthought

- His obsession with religion. Nobody wants to hear that s---, at least nobody that is listening to a Kanye West album. This isn't to disparage religion (that's another topic), but it creates a barrier to entry that none of his other albums have. Can you imagine how excited people would be about Kanye and Dre getting together to work on a rap album? But for a continuation (or sequel or whatever it is) to JIK? No thanks

- He's surrounded by yes men. Not unlike why Eminem keeps making bad albums despite trying different things. The people around him are afraid/unwilling to give him honest feedback, so he's going to keep putting out garbage if he can't assess it critically. If this wasn't a factor he wouldn't be "running for president"

- His mental illness. I don't even want to go down this rabbit hole but it's undeniable at this point. No doubt in my mind his personal issues have severely warped his judgment

I miss the days of when skill used to amaze us and we looked at these emcees as superheroes. Em still does that for me as I can’t figure out how he does what he does, whether it’s sonically pleasing or not.

Remember some of the awful s--- like 'Kings Never Die' / like, the raps ain't bad and song is okay but just that period of him feeling like some yelping rock-tinged geek... that's gone now.
