first this is every genre not just rap

and rap is just someone free-styling with a monotone voice the whole track rap needs melody/harmony as well and a song concept thats the most important part

harmony hardly ever comes into writing raps tho

of course if you're a kendrick or a lupe or a nas you are thinking about song concepts and are an extremely skilled individual but most rap verses are very self contained and could be copy and pasted onto numerous other songs which is what often happens with rappers repeating verses

just going to chime in here:

i don't know jack s--- about music theory but i could still sit down and write something on a piano, i've done that in fact

on the whole rap taking a lot of skill thing, yes and no and it depends imo.

lot of assumptions and sweeping generalizations being made on both sides of this too btw. peoples involvement in the music they're making, be it as a rapper or a singer or w.e varies depending on the artist

ofc you can i think my point is getting misconstrued a bit here

its all well and good to sit at a piano and play around until you find something that works but to be great you gotta have some understand of what you're doing which is msuic theory unless you're particularly gifted which would take an obscene amount of practise and luck

of course it's possible there are a lot of examples for this, michael jackson and even jul that is the biggest selling rapper in france, makes his own beats but doesn't know what a scale is
