How do you know unless you’re there? these situations are fraught w greys. You DO not always know when something is going to turn volatile. It’s dicey. I’m not saying there isn’t a GASP compromise solution but for all this high falutent talk (mostly by people who aren’t experts lol) I suspect the reality is a lot more fragile in practice. Just me talking tho

The difference between me last week and you guys today (and tbh also last wk) is I’m not leaning on good vibes or rhetoric. Like, why can’t “reform” start w 8 can’t wait and move into reallocating funds? Why is that so awful? Tangible solutions that u can implement and sell to voters without it looking like a bunch of bs flirting w anarchy.

Like ffs stop w all this radical (and mostly academic) posturing . The movement has rightly generated a conversation about reform. Utilize that window, and stop squandering it w poorly messaged goofiness.. just my take.

wtf, somehow never even heard of this till now. This guy died in police custody while they filmed for one of those tv shows where they follow cops around.

Javier Ambler was driving home from a friendly poker game in the early hours of March 28, 2019, when a Williamson County sheriff’s deputy noticed that he failed to dim the headlights of his SUV to oncoming traffic. Twenty-eight minutes later, the black father of two sons lay dying on a north Austin street after deputies held him down and used Tasers on him four times while a crew from A&E’s reality show “Live PD” filmed.

Ambler, a 40-year-old former postal worker, repeatedly pleaded for mercy, telling deputies he had congestive heart failure and couldn’t breathe. He cried, “Save me,” before deputies deployed a final shock. His death never made headlines.

the figure deray cites—i believe it’s a 72 percent reduction in deaths?—is based on a city that currently has none of the listed policies and employs all eight perfectly. setting aside the charlie brown-and-the-football vibe of believing that maybe cops will follow the next rules we give them, a number of the biggest police forces in the country already have versions of many of these policies in place.
