Should political debates be interesting though? I'd prefer if it was a dry a--- discussion for hours whether 0,3% raise of some farmer subsidies for using some specific feed instead the prime-time entertainment attempts when people act like sport supporters.

US just seems ahead of the curve but that sports approach and debates losing all substance feels more common and common in Europe too now. s---'s dumb but also pretty sad and I can't see it improving anytime soon.

Idk if an alias yet, but a few debates are needed. You can’t forget how to do fair debate, dating back 50+ years before internet. let candidate's say their plans and foreign policy, and it can sway who some Americans are on the fence with. It wasn’t a clown show, until Trump started saying dumbed down responses that got his fan base fired up.

We still need parties with their own separate pros to keep things more of a level playing field. I can remember in school, government class, about everyone in the class watched the Obama/Romney debate and discussed it into detail. But they are awful now, only because of the candidates. They have to add an age restriction under 70-72 at least, eventually.

Debates are probably unavoidable but their utility seems extremely questionable, since the debating skills and your own presentation play a much bigger role than what you're actually saying or know or want to do even before the clown show since 2016. And as bad as the candidates are, it's not like it's happening in a vacuum. The media happily eats up the shitfest and the voters seem resigned instead of pushing for better candidates.

Debating is also about your public speaking skills. You should be able to address the nation live after a situation like 9/11, and feel comfortable about it as a citizen, because of how the president is addressing it. No way would I want sleepy homicide Joe or Trump who just wants to pardon himself, to address and take action after an attack. And these 2 are awful at political debates. The worst (current, felon Trump) candidates since I can remember since born.

Aye, fair enough. Didn't consider that since I prefer reading a statement over listening to some speech. Though Biden almost falling asleep and confusing Al Qaida with Argentina or smth would be quite memorable.

Trump will ramble about nonsense but he says it loudly & with confidence so no one really thinks twice about it as an age thing. He's also a pathological liar & everyone has just become immune to him spewing bs.

The uncomfortable reality of the current situation is that the only realistic alternative to Biden is Kamala Harris & there's little evidence out there that she would (or any other candidate for that matter) be doing much better. I think Democratic elites are being a bit too reactionary right now. Publicly calling for Biden to step out the race while understanding that they can't force him out only keeps the news media harping on this story while Trump can try to run out the clock. His campaign currently has zero scheduled campaign events. They know keeping Trump out of media headlines is key.

The party looks more incompetent than Biden with that crazy over-reaction. I don't know anyone who planned to vote for Biden (well, mostly against donald) to change their mind after the debate. Instead of changing the topic and switching to talk about policy, they keep feeding into the media which only helps donald too.

Given that russia was already active in Ukraine and Syria (and North Africa) and immigration kept increasing under Trump aside of covid years … there is like zero basis for these ideas.

Yup. Democratic elected officials (& other elites) reaction to the poor debate performance was self-defeating.

In an alternate universe, Democrats publicly defend Biden after the debate & keep their skepticism of him being the nominee private.
