Also I’d love some recs for any sleepers from the past year. Been watching mini series so I haven’t watched many films lately

Yup, that was extremely well researched/done. For whatever reason he got these dudes to really open up for him.

Feels Good Man is a great companion piece if you haven’t seen that.

I'll check it out... haven't heard about it... but I imagine it's about the Pepe Frog creator desperately trying to reclaim his Intellectual Property from the Alt-Right?

I remember when Baked Alaska (an unfortunate acquaintance) just put Pepe on the cover of his dumb book like he drew it.

Fascism always just co-ops whatever looks cool like the Nazis just claiming the SS ruins, Jainist swastika and everything else. They're by definition followers and are never original.

Glad Hopkins won. Thought Chadwick was gonna win just cause he died. Never liked his acting that much tbh.

Daniel also won. That's dope. Also grandma from Minari.

Nice to see Promising Young Woman get something. And If Anything Happens... That short was well done.

Not a big fan of Soul tbh. I kinda only liked 22.

man that was wild. steven soderbergh got owned on that one, especially w Hopkins half a world away not even bothering to stream in lol.

i am conflicted though. def hint of #oscarssowhite giving the big prize to a old british dude who already has an oscar, in an obviously more commanding LEAD role. chadwick was very good, its a flinty performance and given Ma Rainey's storyline less obviosuly a lead. i also think the academy got sick of him winning as f----- as that is, like hes not even around to benefit from it. father found some key momentum with the baftas, and the academy clearly loves hopkins' redemption narrative after phoning it in for 20 years...

Only films I’ve seen are Sound of Metal and Judas. I thought Riz or Chadwick would win Best Actor. I was kind of hoping Riz would get it.

Haven't seen Sound of Metal yet but really need to, I would've watched it the day it dropped if Cianfrance directed it but :/

lol come on man it came out in 1941, there's obviously better movies that have come out since then but it's a super influential and important film. Regardless, I thought the best parts of Mank were the stuff about WRH/Upton Sinclair (honestly I'm a sucker for films about journalism tho lol), and I thought the writing of Citizen Kane was an interesting frame for that political/journalistic era (and vice versa, zooming in on what influenced Mank's writing).

Yeah maybe but I never got the acclaim, I understand its super influential especially when it comes to how films are edited and it pioneered a lot of filmmaking techniques but thats not enough for me to care about the actual movie. Its just a good movie. I guess it's similar to saying Rakim is the best rapper etc.

Yeah exactly, I was actually going to compare it to the convo about Melle Mel in another thread recently. Of course there's been bigger, better, flashier rappers than Melle Mel, but that doesn't mean "The Message" isn't a classic song and he wasn't a super important and influential rapper.

Honestly, I’m really just getting back into film the past six months or so, no exaggeration I watched maybe 3-5 movies a year in the latter half of the decade. So I'm far behind on a lot of newer stuff and would love any recommendations (from the past five years, but also in general)

I like what I've seen of:

-The Safdie brothers. Uncut Gems feels like it was made for me specifically.

-Cary Joji Fukunaga. True Detective s1 is obviously great. Beasts of No Nation is a great adaptation of the book—speaking of which, I'm super bummed he didn't direct the new adaptation of It, cuz that was one of my favorite books as a teenager and I think he would have gotten the darker tone right instead of a Stranger Things rip off.

-Yorgos Lanthimos. From what I've seen so far, he makes super unique movies. Loved Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Favourite, and Killing of a Sacred Deer. Though he debuted in the 00s so he's not as new.

-Taika Waititi. I've seen a lot of hate toward him on the internet, but I really liked Hunt for the Wilderpeople and thought Jojo Rabbit was solid too. The first film I saw of his was Thor Ragnarok and was surprised that any director could make me give a s--- about Marvel/Thor.

Oh d--- I gotchu. Yeah Safdie bros are dope (Heaven Knows What is a must) as well as Lanthimos, Sacred Deer was great. I like Waititi too but not as much (although I need to see WWDITS). As much as I like sci-fi and horror films I've drifted more towards realism based stories.

Two of my favorites would be Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) and Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, MUD) if you haven't seen those 4 films you really should. TPBTP is my favorite movie ever.

I like Cary a lot, True Detective season 1 is incredible. If you liked TD you should definitely watch Maniac with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. He directed the entire series, probably my favorite miniseries ever tbh.

Place Beyond the Pines is a fantastic film, watched that earlier this year. Looks like I already put Blue Valentine on my LB watch list even lol. Maniac and Heaven Knows What are too, I don't remember adding those but I was probably just looking through their director's filmography and added everything I hadn't seen lol.

Never even heard of Take Shelter, but it sounds up my alley. I saw like the first third of Mud a few years ago but fell asleep during it (not because I didn't like it, I was just exhausted). Will def return to that too.

Thanks! I'm really open to anything, genre film/b-movie included.
