I've always felt like one moment Drake was just kind of...Drake
Then suddenly he was in the running for best rap artist of this generation.

    What caused this?

First time I knew Drake was gonna be big was after his verse on BedRock back in 2009.
That was when Young Money started gaining exposure, that track was huge and Drake was comfortably the best rapper on the track.
Since then I think everyone knew he would be the next big thing.

    Serious Answer:

He was Internet famous already, because c'mon, wheelchair jimmy making rnb rap crossover songs? Then he got exposure from Wayne back when he wasn't falling off (although he's back now for sure), and had a whole bunch of radio hits, no doubt through his YMCMB connects. Then Take Care came out and solidified him as more than a singles artist, and you get modern drake

Replacement Girl got featured on BET in like 07 I think. He recorded over Man of the Year, originally a Wayne song, and Wayne was given some of his music from Jas Prince, and invited him on tour not too long after that. During that time, they recorded Ransom and Brand New. He came out with So Far Gone in 09, and Best I Ever Had and Successful helped make the tape his breakthrough to the mainstream. There was a well popularized bidding war to sign him after that, but he eventually signed with Young Money. Thank Me Later came out in 2010, and was and still is a very underrated project. He followed that up with Dreams Money Can Buy and Marvin's Room in 2011, dropping Take Care later that year. The rest, as they say, is history.
