I see the phrase “real hip hop” thrown around all the time, and I find it to be cringeworthy. The idea that a form of hip hop (usually stuff that is dubbed “lyrical rap”) is realer or more hip hop-like than another (usually stuff that is dubbed “mumble rap”) is stupid to me.

Despite that, I respect that people have their own definitions of things. Perhaps one of you have a definition of “real hip hop” that I would like. Feel free to also give examples of artists you deem “real hip hop” and “fake hip hop”.

real hip-hop is when you are honest in songs and tell the truth.

if your reality is money then this is real hip hop for you.

fake hip hop is when someone says things that they have no idea what it is.

it doesn't depend on the sound or the beats or the flow.

I can agree with this too! If this is the case, real hip hop is the only hip hop I listen to regularly. I’ve had people say I don’t listen to real hip hop, and that’s hilarious to me. I just find it cringe when people get elitist like that.

The people who s--- on other people and talk about real hip-hop are just cringe people who don't like that it's not the 90s anymore, can't blame them I guess cause I feel the same way about rock lol. I'll also say zoomers who get mad at people who don't like Playboi Carti or the "yb better" crowd are also cringe, I think there's merit to both aspects of the genre and people would be a lot better off if they listened to everything or at least gave it a chance.

Fax. The Carti/YB stans that get like that don’t realize they’re no better than the old heads that they hate. It’s a two sides of the same coin situation when it comes to old heads and elitist new school stans.

This is exactly why I try to listen to as much music as I can, old or new. I do have some bias toward new music though

There's a clear difference between Hip hop and Rap to me.

Hip hop is rapping about the culture with old school sounds such as DJ Premier. DJ Premier is hip hop.
Nas, g--- Star, Phryme, PAC. Make fun all you want, but Macklemores new song heroes, is pure hip hop, wether you want to admit it or not.

Rap is more about just talking s--- and just rapping, like Em, Wayne, Benny, etc.

This perspective makes sense. In this context, I can definitely see “real hip hop” being a useful descriptor when compared to something that’s just rap
