Shiet I really hope it's not that. First scenario sounds much better.

I just want a good ending. He gets killed or put in jail. Anything would be better than driving a boat into a hurricane and somehow swimming to shore and becoming a lumberjack

I rewatched Dexter during quarantine and most of it holds up pretty well—I think people (myself included) often forget that Dexter never really tried to be "AAA Prestige TV" like The Wire or The Sopranos, it was always a little goofy despite its dark content and was never supposed to be realistic.

I think the fourth season is still the highlight (and the only one I'd say approaches true "prestige TV"), though 1-3 are still great too. Seasons 5 and 7 are flawed but enjoyable. 6 is pretty bad but still watchable, and season 8 I genuinely couldn't make it past the first episode lol. Even during quar I couldn't validate spending 12 hours rewatching S8 of Dexter.

The teaser actually has me excited for this, I think it could turn out legitimately good. For one thing, we (hopefully) don't have to follow all these characters like Quinn and Batista anymore, who ran out of interesting storylines like three seasons before the show ended and were basically just filler (killing off Doakes so early was a mistake cuz he was by far the best cop character, but they kinda wrote themselves into a corner with that one). Some fresh faces and villains are gonna be great for the show. I assume Hannah/Harrison will be back in some form...I actually didn't mind Hannah as a character I just think she was handled sorta poorly and was shoehorned in weirdly.

If there's enough story to continue this for more than one season that will give it a good ending, I trust the original showrunner's vision—but my biggest worry is that showtime will artificially extend the show's life again like they do with all their shows. I know that the ending the showrunner initially had in mind was something like

it turns out that all of Dexter's voiceovers in the show were him ruminating on his life on his last day on death row, strapped down to a table waiting to get the lethal injection. It was in a reddit AMA and he didn't say exactly how he envisioned Dexter getting caught or how the story got there, but I think in terms of Dexter's fate it would have a fitting ending.

Yeah I remember reading that. That would have been a great ending. Also the actress who plays Hannah confirmed she won't be in it which I'm okay with. Like most shows the family aspect always got in the way of the story line so I'm ok if there's no Harrison.

Also if there is a Harrison story line added I hope he's not a serial killer cause that would be really corny

Oh wow I'm kinda surprised they didn't try to shoehorn her in, I guess as it stands in the series she thought he was dead from the hurricane and is in argentina or whatever lol. I'm sure they'll address Harrison and Hannah in someway or another even if they're not actually in it.

Harrison being a serial killer would be so f---in stupid lol

Certainly curious. I really liked the first 2 seasons and stopped there. Never watched beyond that, and heard all the stories about the show's decline. Might check this out, and/or seasons 3 and 4.

Iv just recently started watching Dexter for the first time ever. Thoroughly enjoying it so far.

However, I’m currently on Season 4 episode 4 and I’m now dreading finishing this season since all of you guys have said after season 4 it becomes a disaster lmao. Iv also seen and known for years that the ending is said to be one of, if not, the worst in history, but iv never read into why so I still don’t know what’s to come which is good I suppose lol.

I personally thought season 3 was pretty garbage, with Miguel Prado joining Dexter as a friend/co-killer. Did not enjoy it as much as the rest of the show so far.

Hooked right back in on season 4 though with the Trinity Killer story.

Anyways, spare a thought for me knowing I’m heading into seasons 5-8 soon. Peace.

PS - I watched the series ‘You’ before ever seeing Dexter and i was shocked at the similarity lmao. Maybe it’s the narrating element, idk. Both good in their own right though. Dexter wellllll ahead setting the standard though, clearly.

There’s a scene in Season 2 of You where there’s a reference to Dexter. It’s one of the first things I noticed about You. I call it Dexter Lite.

I think you'll still enjoy season 5 and 7. They're not as good as the first four but they're solid and entertaining. Season 8 is borderline unwatchable and honestly a waste of your time lol, I'd just watch the first episode and then read the plot synopsis for episodes 2-11 and then watch the last episode to see how bad it is. Season 6 is pretty dumb but it's still nowhere near as bad as 8.
